CDS is a global leader providing innovative solutions to complex development challenges. We design programs to meet unique local needs, while also meeting the standards of an integrated global economy.
Conflict and Disaster Recovery
CDC’s work on Conflict and Disaster Recovery is based on the principle that the aftermath of most conflicts and disasters can be better-managed and recovery can occur more quickly not only through strong institutions and leadership, but also through more efficient utilization of key components of the private sector.
CDC Development Solutions has extensive experience in developing countries that have recently emerged from internal conflict and that are the sites of vast mineral reserves. CDC works to make countries less vulnerable to what is frequently called the “resource curse,” in which an abundance of natural resource wealth leads to conflict, unequal distribution of wealth, and undemocratic governance. One particularly effective strategy CDC Development Solutions offers is the creation of a wide domestic base of local suppliers of goods and services needed by large and often multinational companies in oil and mineral-rich countries.
Where resource distribution is not at issue, CDC Development Solutions designs programs that link small and medium-size businesses to opportunities with multinational contractors, whether in post-conflict or post-disaster settings. We provide expertise in leveraging the local private sector’s ability to contribute to relief and reconstruction efforts, thereby hastening the rejuvenation of local economies and individual incomes, and deterring potential corruption and fraud that is often prevalent in emergency settings.
